Brief History of Padrão dos Descobrimentos
The Padrão dos Descobrimentos was built under the Portuguese World Exhibition in 1940 by Cottinelli Telmo as a tribute to Henrique the Navigator. At this time the monument was built with perishable materials, so in 1958 it was dismantled and the construction of the current monument. The monument just as we know it today was founded in 1960 in the celebration of the five hundredth anniversary of the death the Infante D. Henrique. In 1985 the interior was redesigned, giving to the monument a belvedere, an auditorium and exhibition halls.
