10 programs to enjoy Christmas in Lisbon

We chose 10 programs to spend Christmas in Lisbon, so you can enjoy the best this season has to offer!

1. Christmas lights in the city

On November 30th, the Christmas lights in Lisbon were turned on. Traditionally the city receives Christmas decorations at several different spots. This year the Christmas tree was set on Praça D. Pedro IV – better known as Rossio. The favorite places of those who want to enjoy this Christmas atmosphere are: Comercio Square, Augusta Street and other downtown streets, Rossio and Chiado. The lights will shine until January 6th, enjoy!

 

2. Christmas Videomapping in Comercio Square

“The doors enchanted” is the name of the videomapping that will celebrate Christmas at the Comercio Square. The projections, which should happen on the facade of the Arc of Augusta Street, will have as its theme the Advent Calendar. There will be three daily sessions, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm, which will take place between December, 11th and 20th. The show is 15 minutes long and promises to enchant everyone.

3. Ice Rink Palace Square

Part of the program presented by the Council of Lisbon for the Christmas celebrations include an Ice Rink. The attraction will be available to children and adults from December 8th to January, 10th from 10am to 8pm.

4. Christmas Concerts in Lisbon

From 5th to 19th of december, EGEAC brings to Lisbon the concerts program for the Christmas season. The invitation is to discover the city’s heritage through music. There will be 10 concerts in seven churches, to which are added two cultural spaces, the São Jorge Cinema and the São Luiz Municipal Theatre. The complete schedule can be checked in EGEAC site.

5. Christmas in Cascais

Until January 6th, Three Kings Day, Cascais turns into a real Christmas Village. The traditional lighting can be enjoyed from the top of a Ferris wheel. In addition, visitors can learn ice skating or enjoy views of professional skaters on a rink of 350m². On Saturdays, there’s Santa Claus parade, and those who want to help can buy the gifts in a solidarity market of handmade products. Earnings will revert to charity institutions of Cascais.

6. Christmas Kingdom in Sintra

Sintra receives again the Christmas Kingdom. The event will take place at Parque da Liberdade and Historical Center, from 3rd to 23rd of December. Visitors can go to Valenças Palace and watch a historical animation on the influence of King Fernando II in the Christmas tree tradition. You can also visit the Christmas market and buy the various crafts.

7. Christmas Holidays Under Water

This program is dedicated to kids between 4 and 12 years old. The Lisbon Oceanario invites the little sailors to travel to different habitats on the planet and meet marine biodiversity. The program includes fun and educational activities and can prolong to a night program called “Sleeping with sharks”.

8. Santa Claus Arrival at the Zoo

On December 5th, 2015, Santa Claus and his elves arrive at Lisbon Zoo. Parades, music and toys workshops promise to cheer up this Christmas. In addition to this program kids can visit the home of Santa Claus, take the traditional photo with him, and are also invited to exchange their used toys with other children. In the free access area, all visitors can hang their wishes and messages on a giant Christmas tree.

9. Christmas Shows in CCB

The Centro Cultural de Belem – CCB is also celebrating the Christmas season. One of the highlights of the program is the traditional Christmas ballet – The Nutcracker – presented by the Dance School of the National Conservatory. Two sessions will be take place on December, 17th. In addition, the Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon and the Lisbon Cantat Choir present Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, on December, 20th. 10. Christmases of the World – Gulbenkian Foundation

The Choir and Orchestra of the Gulbenkian Foundation brings an emblematic concert, Christmas songs from different countries. Portugal, France, Belgium, England, Wales, Germany, Bulgaria and the United States will be in the repertoire with its more traditional Christmas songs in orchestral versions.
