Bussaco Palace Hotel – The experience of staying in a palace
Located in Serra do Buçaco, near Coimbra, is the Bussaco Palace Hotel. This palace with about 130 years of history has been built for the last King and Queen of Portugal. Converted into a hotel around the year 1904, the inauguration took place with the presence of King D. Carlos accompanied by Queen D. Amélia de Orleans e Bragança.
All this historical climate along with the extraordinary architecture of the palace helps create an indescribable atmosphere that by itself makes worth the visit. Currently the building is decorated with tiles illustrating scenes of the portuguese Discoveries, and furniture from the time the palace was build. In order to keep the environment of a palace it may seem to lack in some typical amenities of a 5* hotel, both regarding the structure of the rooms and the hotel itself (there are some complaints on booking and travel tips websites about it). Even though, makes anyone feel in a true fairy tale. Some rooms have balconies and terraces, if you have the opportunity to request this option, do it. The garden view is amazing and very worthwhile.
As if all this were not enough, the hotel restaurant, which was formerly the banquet room of Brangança`s family, has a tasteful decor with Arabian style ceiling and a terrace overlooking the garden. If the weather is nice and you have the opportunity, ask for a table on this balcony. The environment is extremely romantic and the service very good. About the menu, there is no point in trying to describe it, but it certainly worth trying.
The hotel is located within the Buçaco National Forest, which has 105 hectares. All it surroundings was walled by the Order of Carmelites in the seventeenth century. By doing that they were aiming to ensure their total isolation. From a botanical point of view, this is one of the greatest natural assets of the country with several species, such as redwood, eucalyptus, araucaria, among others. Within this space there is a Via Crucis passing for 20 chapels with terracotta figures in actual size, and there is more: water sources, viewpoints and the famous Porta de Coimbra. We recommend a few rides to explore the forest and its beauties.
Reasons abound to know this hotel, but even if there is no reason only the experience of staying in a palace it is totally valid.
On the hotel website you can find a more detailed history of the palace, the Buçaco National Forest and tours available.
